Who is Judit Polgar?




Judit Polgar is a Hungarian chess grandmaster, widely regarded as the best woman to have ever played the game. She was born in 1976 in Budapest, to a family of chess enthusiasts. Her father, Laszlo Polgar, was an educational psychologist who believed that any child could become a genius if trained in a specific subject from an early age. She was also the youngest player ever to break into the top 100 in the world rankings, at 12 years old.


Judit achieved many remarkable feats in her chess career. She is the only woman to have surpassed 2700 Elo rating, reaching a peak of 2735 in 2005. She is also the only woman to have been ranked in the top 10 of all chess players, reaching number eight in 2004. She has won or shared first place in many prestigious tournaments, such as Hastings, Madrid, Leon, US Open, Hoogeveen, Sigeman & Co, Japfa, and Najdorf Memorial.


Judit has also defeated many world champions and top players in classical or rapid chess, such as Magnus Carlsen, Garry Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Boris Spassky, Vasily Smyslov, Ruslan Ponomariov, Alexander Khalifman, and Rustam Kasimdzhanov. She is the only woman to have beaten a reigning world number one player (Kasparov in 2002).


Judit retired from competitive chess in 2014, after representing Hungary in eight Chess Olympiads (in the open section) and winning two gold medals (in the women's section).
